Weather info
Weather forecasts
Because of the high and large landmasses close to all sea areas in Greece
it is extremely difficult to predict what local winds and wind strength
will be. The Greek Meteorological Service does its best, but nonetheless
cannot give really accurate forecasts for many areas. Warnings of
approaching depressions will be given, but again the erratic progress of
these makes forecasting difficult.
VHP frequencies
A forecast for all Greek waters in Greek and English is given at 0600,
1000, 1600, 2200 UTC. For local time add 2 hours in the winter and 3 hours
in the summer. The forecast covers all Greek waters for Z+12 hours. Gale
warnings are given at the beginning of the broadcast. A sécurité
warning on Ch 16 gives all the VHP channels for the different shore
stations and you will need to choose whichever shore station is closest to
you. In practice the advice notice on shore stations is often mumbled and
at such a speed that it can be difficult to hear, but is worth listening
to in case VHP frequencies for the different shore stations are changed.
At the beginning of each chapter the relevant VHP channels and times for the
weather forecasts are annotated onto the introduction map for that
chapter. The Ch 86 continuous weather forecast broadcast for the Saronic
is stated still to be in operation, but I was not able to pick it up in
2003. A weather forecast from Italy is transmitted continuously on VHP
Ch 68. It can be picked up in the Ionian and in fact all the way across to
Minorca in the Balearics. It is transmitted using a synthesised voice
similar to some US forecasts and gives a forecast for the whole of the
Mediterranean, first in Italian and then in English. The format is
identical to that for Italian forecasts (see Italian Waters Pilot).
HF Radio
A forecast in Greek and English is broadcast on the following frequencies
for SSB radios. (Receivers only will need a BFO switch.) Kerkira
2830kHz 0633, 0903, 1533, 2133 UT Limnos 2730kHz 0633, 0903, 1533, 2133
UT Iraklion 2799kHz 0633, 0903, 1533, 2133 UT Rhodes 2624kHz 0633,
0903, 1533, 2133 UT
Broadcast Radio
Weather forecasts are transmitted on the National Programme in Greek only.
The forecasts are at 0430 (1 hour later when DST is in force). KHz MHz
Athens 729 91?6 Corfu 1008 99?3 Iraklion 954 97?5

Patras 1485 92?5 Volos 1485 100?7 Zakinthos 927 95?2
Around Athens ERA radio 91?6FM is reported to have a forecast in English
at 0630-0700 local time. For the eastern Mediterranean a marine weather
forecast is given by the Austrian short wave service (in German only) on
6150MHz/49m at 0945 and 1400 local time (from 1 May to 1 October only).
Television
On several of the television channels a weather forecast in Greek with
satellite photos and wind forces and directions shown on the map is given
after the news around 2100 local time. Many cafés and bars will have a
television somewhere and you should ask for ? kairos parakalo.
Port police and marinas
The port police get a weather forecast faxed to them several times a day.
Depending on the inclination of the port police it may be worthwhile
asking them for a forecast. Most of the few marinas in Greece post a
forecast, often taken off the internet.

SMS text message forecast
Poseidon provide a website weather forecast and can now send a basic
forecast by text message to your mobile phone. Text: W GPS (co-ordinates
of position for forecast) and send to 4264. e.g. W GPS 38 50 20 43
requests a forecast for the area around Levkas. The message gives wind
strength and direction for 24 hours in three 6 hour intervals. e.g.
24/9 15 4B (NW) indicates Force 4 NW wind at 1500 hrs UTC on 24 September
The service costs around 25 cents per message.
